A wonderful historical profile of the Roman town of Pompei, which was famously destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79AD. Charts the historical context of the town, plus details the archaeological remains preserved by the ash after the eruption. With 20 watercolour illustrations by Alberto Pisa, plus several other B&W illustrations and a fold-out town plan to the rear. Part of a series of travel and historical books published by A&C Black in the early 20th century. Hardback, bound in decorative blue cloth with gilt lettering. In very good condition indeed. Minor bumps externally.  Clean inside with no writing or bookplates. 180 pages. Published in 1910.
