The Twenty-Four Cases of Filial Piety – c.1920
An unusual and very attractive folding album of colour images, depicting examples of Confucian moral stories from Chinese history and culture. They were first written by Guo Jujing during the Yuan dynasty of the 13th and 14th centuries, and were meant to demonstrate cases of outstanding moral performance in different scenarios. With 24 colour paintings on silk, accompanied by text descriptions in Chinese and English, and bordered with cream-coloured patterned silk edges. In a concertina-style album, with wooden boards at each end, one of which has a Chinese ‘Foo’ character inside a circle. Not dated, but thought to have been printed in Fuzhou in 1930. One of several other similar released around the same period, with others including depictions of tea-making, rice and the silk production process. In very good condition indeed. One faded scratch to front board otherwise very sharp. No writing or marking inside. 21cm x 15cm when folded.
