A first edition, first impression of this seminal work by the British philosopher Bertrand Russell (1872-1970). Aimed at a general reader, it traces western philosophy from ancient to modern times, and contributed towards the author’s receipt of a Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950. Russell wrote the work while living in the US during the Second World War, basing it on a series of lectures he gave in Philadelphia during the early 1940s. The book has remained in print since then and is highly regarded in its field, as well as being readable and often witty. Published by George Allen and Unwin in London in 1946. Hardback, with the original jacket, printed on wartime paper – in this case a map showing part of Italy. In good condition. Jacket has some edgewear, is price-clipped, and has a chip to the top of the spine. Previous owner’s inscription to front pastedown, partly hidden by flap. Otherwise clean inside with no other markings or writing.
