Homer – The Odyssey – Two Volumes – 1848
A beautiful 1848 set of the epic Greek poem, in two volumes, bound in full calf and in unusually good condition. One of the oldest surviving pieces of literature, dating from the 7th or 8th century BC, Homer’s Odyssey is divided into 24 sections and follows the story of the Greek hero of Odysseus. This set was published in 1848 by William Blackwood and Sons, using a translation by Philip Stanhope Worsley. The poem was originally composed in Homeric Greek and performed verbally for an audience. Hardback, bound in full light brown calf, with gilt borders, marbled endpapers and text blocks. Decorative spines with five raised bands, and gilt title lettering against red compartments. In very good condition indeed. Only the slightest edgewear externally, and both volumes clean inside with no writing or bookplates. 307 pages and 299 pages. 20cm x 14cm.
