Then an academic at the University of Cambridge, Hawking wanted to write a popular book that tried to explain space and time, the origin and the fate of the universe, gravity, relativity, quantum mechanics and other fundamentals of modern physics, including the search for a unified theory. It went on to sell tens of million copies around the world and was translated into dozens of languages. Hawking passed away in 2018, having suffered from motor neurone disease for most of his adult life. He was portrayed by Eddie Redmayne in the 2014 biopic The Theory of Everything.
