Aesop’s Fables – 1714
A well-preserved 1714 edition of Aesop’s Fables, translated into English. This is the sixth edition of the translation by the English courtier and author Roger L’Estrange (1616-1704), which first appeared in 1692. Its full title is “Fables of Aesop and other eminent Mythologists: with Morals and Reflections bound with Fables and Other Stories”. L’Estrange’s translation helped popularise the fables more widely, particularly among children. Each tale is accompanied by a short reflection or commentary on its meaning. Comprises a preface, a biography of Aesop, an extensive alphabetical index, and 550 pages of fables by Aesop, Barlandus, Anlanus, Abstemius, Poggius and others. Hardback, with full calf original boards. Decorative spine with five raised bands and compartments, gilt lettering. Likely rebacked sometime in the 19th-century.  Endpapers replaced more recently. Clean inside with no writing, inscriptions or other markings. Externally very good, slight loss to top of spine and some rubbing to edges. Published in 1714 in London by Richard Sare and others.
