A rare original poster for the epic 1963 Egyptian film Saladin, directed by Yousuf Chahine with a screenplay co-written by Naguib Mahfouz. Starring Ahmed Mazhar in the title role, with an ensemble cast of other well-known actors of the period, it is regularly cited as one of the most important Egyptian films of the period. The movie was also known as Saladin the Victorious and Saladin and the Great Crusades. Set in the 12th century, it tells the story of Saladin’s successful retaking of Jerusalem in the Third Crusade, and the ensuing truce with King Richard of England. This is the English-language version of the poster, designed by the poster artist Mohamed Ragheb and printed lithographically in Cairo. This variant was designed to help promote the film overseas, with a separate Arabic-language poster used domestically and within the region. Now rarely comes available, with only a handful of examples appearing at auction in recent years. In very good condition, minor marks and wear only. 90cm x 118cm. In two sheets, as issued.
