A handsome 1791 three-volume set of Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations, a founding work of political economy and one which remains highly influential today. Smith was a Scottish philosopher and economist who taught and lectured in Glasgow, developing themes on the market economy, international trade and commerce, price determination, the flow of labour and capital, legislation and other key tenets of economic theory. He was a proponent of the free market and advocated for open competition, while also opposing the slave trade, high taxes and monopolies. First published in 1776, The Wealth of Nations drew together his thoughts into a single magnum opus, divided into three Books which outline his arguments on economic theory and development. This is a sixth edition, published in 1791, and the first to be issued after Smith’s death in July 1790. As with other editions from the late 18th century, it features an index, as well as Smith’s Additions and Corrections, which first appeared in the third edition. Bound in period quarter brown calf against black cloth. Five raised banks to the spine, with title and volume numbers in gilt lettering against a burgundy background. In very good condition. Some minor rubbing and bumps externally. Previous owner’s inscription to title page of each volume, otherwise very clean and bright inside. 22cm x 14cm.
